How Uno scoring works

Most households play Uno as one-hand-and-done, but the official game is played to 500 points over several rounds — and that's where a score sheet earns its keep.

Ending a round. A round ends the moment one player plays their last card (having remembered to call "Uno!" at one card, of course). That winner then scores the total value of all the cards left in everyone else's hands. The other players score nothing for the round — the winner takes it all.

Card values. Count each opponent's leftover cards like this:

• Number cards (0–9): face value — a red 7 is 7 points.
• Skip, Reverse, Draw Two: 20 points each.
• Wild and Wild Draw Four: 50 points each.

So going out while an opponent is sitting on two Wilds and a Draw Two nets you 120 points from that hand alone — which is exactly why holding Wilds too long is dangerous.

Winning the game. Write the round winner's points in their column, keep a running sum (a small running total in the corner of each box works well), and the first player to reach 500 points wins. If a round ends because the draw pile runs out, the player with the fewest points in hand takes the round and scores the difference.

The popular low-score variant. Many groups flip the scoring: each round, every player scores the points left in their own hand, and when someone crosses 500 the game ends — lowest total wins. It keeps everyone invested in every round. The same sheet works for both; just agree which way you're counting before round one, not during round six.
