How pickleball scoring works
Side-out scoring. In standard (doubles) pickleball, only the serving team can score. Win a rally on serve and you get a point and keep serving — the partners swap sides and serve to the other court. Win a rally as the receiving team and you score nothing, but you take the serve: that's a side-out. Games go to 11 points, win by 2, and matches are best of three games.
The three-number call. Before every serve the server calls own score – opponents' score – server number. Each team gets two servers per service turn: when the first server loses a rally, the partner serves as server 2; when they lose one too, it's a side-out. "5-3-2" means the serving team leads 5–3 and is on its second server. The exception is the very first service turn of a game — the starting team only gets ONE server, which is why every game opens with the famous call: "zero-zero-two."
Tracking the server number. That third number is the one scorekeepers lose. Use the sheet's serving box: write in each game's starting server, and circle 1 or 2 as the service turn changes. If a dispute comes up, replay the ladder — each crossed number was a point on someone's serve, so the sheet reconstructs who should be serving.
Switching ends. Teams change ends between games, and in a deciding third game they switch when the first team reaches 6 points — the ladder's 6 box is your reminder. (In singles the same scoring applies with one server: serve from the right when your score is even, from the left when it's odd — the call is just two numbers.)
Using the sheet: cross off the next number in the serving team's ladder each time they win a rally on serve — the highest crossed number is the score, and "win by 2" means a 12-10 or 15-13 finish uses the spare boxes at the end of the ladder.
